Embedded Systems / Firmware Engineer

Job Location: Brisbane, Queensland

This is a hands-on technical role where you'll work on satellite and cellular connected IoT devices for the livestock and agriculture sector. You'll sit at the centre of the engineering capability, spanning product compliance, hardware, RF, and firmware. Your work will be deployed on real devices in the field, and you'll own subsystems end-to-end. If you're a generalist who likes solving problems, being close to the product, and having a high level of ownership, this could be the job for you.

The Role

  • Provide hands-on technical delivery across compliance, hardware, RF, and firmware workstreams
  • Support compliance testing, help interpret standards, and prepare documentation for lab submission
  • Own component selection for key subsystems, such as solar panels, batteries, and RF modules
  • Develop and run practical hardware test plans, covering performance, reliability, and environmental requirements
  • Help shape RF system requirements and manage the day-to-day relationship with connectivity partners
  • Support the testing and deployment of new firmware releases and embedded algorithms
  • Act as a technical liaison with external development partners and component suppliers
  • Own documentation and configuration control, including hardware design records and compliance documentation
  • Work closely with internal teams and get out into the field, where the devices actually live

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, Telecommunications, or a related discipline
  • 3 to 5 years' industry experience in embedded systems and/or electronics, ideally with some RF exposure
  • Some experience with RF design, testing, or certification (or the appetite to grow into it)
  • Experience building, modifying, and programming prototype and test hardware
  • Working knowledge of embedded C/C++ and microcontroller-based firmware development
  • Comfortable developing and running structured hardware test plans
  • Exposure to satellite or cellular IoT connectivity is a plus
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and familiarity with cloud-connected device architectures is beneficial
  • Experience with PCB-level troubleshooting, component sourcing, and supplier evaluation is nice to have
  • Prior work in agtech, livestock technology, or ruggedised/outdoor IoT hardware is also desirable

Not every line here is a hard stop. If you have solid electronics fundamentals, a generalist's instinct for working things out, and the attitude to close the gaps on the job, we want to hear from you. This is the shape of the problem, not a checklist you must already tick.

Why This Role

You'll work on a genuinely hard problem: a ruggedised, low-power, satellite-connected node that has to survive outdoors and get data back reliably from remote locations. The company has a decade of history and a real product in the field, so the engineering is mature rather than speculative. You'll have unusual breadth of ownership and clear influence over where the product goes next. You'll be part of a small team that values technical ability and rewards people who take initiative.

Reality Check

This role is not for someone who wants to sit behind a desk and code all day. You'll work across multiple disciplines, from compliance to hardware to RF and firmware, and you'll spend real time with internal teams and out in the field with the product. That is exactly why it's an on-site role, not a caveat. You'll need to be comfortable with a high level of ownership, able to navigate messy technical problems, and happy to drive your own work forward.

Location

This role is based in Brisbane, QLD, and is on-site by design. The person in this role is hands-on with the product and embedded with the internal teams building it, so being physically present matters. If you're not already in Brisbane, you'll need to be willing to relocate. This isn't a remote or hybrid role, and that's deliberate: the value is in being where the product and the people are.

To apply, send your resume and a brief introduction outlining your experience and why this role suits you. Please include specific examples of your work in embedded systems and electronics, and any RF or testing experience you have.
