We're partnering with an Australian technology company building sophisticated cloud-based software platforms used to solve complex engineering and operational challenges.

We're looking for a Backend Software Engineer to design and build scalable backend services that power modern distributed applications. You'll work on cloud-native systems, APIs, databases and infrastructure that require high levels of reliability, performance and scalability.

The Role

As a Backend Software Engineer, you'll design, develop and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that support modern cloud applications.

You'll work across backend services, cloud infrastructure, databases, APIs and distributed systems, building secure, reliable and maintainable software that powers business-critical platforms.

Working closely with product managers and software engineers, you'll help deliver high-quality backend systems while contributing to architecture, technical design and continuous improvement.

What You'll Be Working On

• Develop clean, efficient and well-tested backend software.
• Design and build scalable backend services.
• Develop secure RESTful APIs that integrate with cloud services and external systems.
• Design and optimise SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Build backend services supporting:
  • Application orchestration
  • Workflow management
  • Event processing
  • Service integration
  • System monitoring and operational tooling
• Deploy and manage cloud applications running on AWS or GCP.
• Containerise applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Participate in architecture discussions, planning, estimation and technical reviews.
• Write unit, integration and automated tests.
• Optimise backend performance, scalability and reliability.
• Produce technical documentation including APIs and deployment processes.
• Participate in peer code reviews and mentor junior engineers where required.
• Explore modern development practices including AI-assisted development tools.

We're Looking For

You'll ideally have:

• 5+ years of backend software development experience.
• Strong experience building scalable backend applications.
• Commercial experience with Golang, Ruby on Rails or Django.
• Strong API design and development experience.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems and cloud-native applications.
• Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Experience deploying applications into AWS or GCP.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Strong debugging and performance optimisation skills.
• Good understanding of software engineering best practices and the software development lifecycle.
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor is advantageous.
