Tools packaged into user experience, connectivity, and medical industry groups

Embedded systems company Wind River has packed up its portfolio of Android development tools into a single one-pot dish called Wind River Solution Accelerators.

The Intel subsidiary has grouped these software modules by theme and broken them into user experience, connectivity, and medical industry vertical-aligned solutions.

The user experience (UX) package features a hyper-boot component for accelerated Android boot time. Devices are claimed to “resume from RAM” in less than a second and “resume from Flash” in less than 8 seconds. This group also features an implementation of a Windows-style overlapping function for Android, which although probably not workable on smaller form factor devices, could prove interesting for future development.

The connectivity tools are focused on multimedia interoperability capabilities via the DLNA standard, SyncML support, and FM radio capabilities. Finally, the medical group now supports the IEEE 11073 stack and a Bluetooth health device protocol implementation and applications for medical sensor management and resulting data display, reporting, and communication.

Technical Note: The IEEE 11073 stack is the format for information exchange between personal health devices such as weight scales, blood pressure monitors, and blood oxygen monitors.

According to Wind River’s Chris Buerger, these modules have been engineered around fast-paced technology release cycles, the competitive pressures to meet tight market deadlines, and the demand for differentiating features while staying on budget.
